underneath the masks: philadelphia mummers parade

Mummers Parade, Philadelphia, 1909
This put a different spin on the vintage photos I'd been enjoying: the annual New Year's day Mummers Parade in Philadelphia has always been subversive but, according to Slate, this year's parade also highlighted the city tradition's shadowy history of treating minority ethnic groups.

  1. FWIW: There's a chapter in Deborah Wong's book "Speak It Louder" that discusses Cambodian immigrants in the Mummers Parade, and she goes into a lot of detail about the tradition of marginalizing minority ethnic groups throughout the years (and how some groups attempt to respond to this).

  2. Thanks for that Michael - I'll have to seek that out.
